Traditional Upholstery

When having an old chair re-upholstered it is just as important to address the padded foundation as well as the cover. Although the padding may seem fine, the old hessian and jute webbings become dry and brittle after around 30 years. If a new cover is pulled over old workings, often it’s enough to cause the old hessian spring cover to break around the top of the springs and allow the old padding to drop down amongst the springs.

Sometimes it might happen after a few months, sometimes a couple of years, but it’s a risk not worth taking. Getting the foundation right on traditional furniture upholstery is important because, like building houses on mud, it’s the difference between your furniture lasting a year or a lifetime.

Summerfield Upholstery have always been passionate in using the correct methods and materials when restoring traditional furniture. We are well practiced in the correct use of Flock (a bluish type of padding made from recycled rag that has been shredded to fluff and seen in nearly all early soft furnishings), coconut fibre and horse hair as well as cotton lintas paddings. We rebuild sprung seats with the use of new jute webbing, hessian, and can even replace traditional old hourglass springs when your old ones have broken or become too soft.

We are well practiced in making new coconut fibre or horse hair stitched edges. Diamond button and pleating in flock is also another traditional upholsterer’s art that we do. At Summerfield Upholstery we care about doing your job properly, no shortcuts, and no hidden botch ups. That’s why we have been around since 1946. We do it right.
